Experts pay special attention to security and defence of the Baltic region

2019 04 21

On March 20–21, General Jonas Žemaitis Military Academy of Lithuania (MAL) held the first international conference in Lithuania on security and defence of the Baltic region. High-ranking officers, diplomats, defence policy makers and academics discussed the specifics of defence and ways to use the experience of the Western European countries in the Baltics.
Organized on behalf of the Chief of Defence of the Lithuanian Armed Forces, the conference was honoured by the presence of Raimundas KAROBLIS, Minister of National Defence, Major General Vitalijus VAIKŠNORAS, Chief of Defence Staff, Jussi NIINISTÖ, Finnish Minister of Defence and experts from other Baltic states, NATO allies, U.S. and other partner countries.
The conference analyzed military strategic changes in the region since 1990 when the Baltics restored their independence and Finnish defence policy after the annexation of Crimea. The conference speakers shared their personal experience gained during international missions in crisis regions, examined the formation and development of the armed forces in the Baltic states, considered the future and challenges of the small states’ defence and discussed the conditions for preserving democracy in the future. Thus, it was aimed to bring the Baltic region into the international spotlight and foster national and regional cooperation among defence specialists of NATO countries.
The experts of the Research Centre and other sections of the MAL seek to develop the conference into a prestigious continuous project making an important contribution to planning defence policy.
The conference was held in the framework of Vilnius Security Forum 2019 dedicated to NATO’s 70th Anniversary and Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia’s 15th Anniversary of Membership in NATO.
