A lecture on arms control by a NATO representative

On October 7, General Jonas Žemaitis Military Academy of Lithuania (MAL) welcomed Mr. William Alberque, Director of the NATO WMD Arms Control, Disarmament, and Non-Proliferation Centre, Brussels. The guest presented a lecture Contemporary Developments in Arms Control: Implications for NATO Defence and Deterrence.
Mr. Alberque talked about the history of NATO divided into six stages starting with the year 1946. The focus was on the sixth one addressing the events in Ukraine that have begun in 2014 and strategic environment, including Russian and Chinese nuclear strategies.
The third-year cadets and military and civil staff of the MAL and the Lithuanian Armed Forces joined a discussion that revolved around arms control in NATO countries and a long-term obligation to control arms, disarmament and non-proliferation treaties. It also dealt with current arms control and medium-range missile threat that appeared in August 1958 and has remained to present today. The expert analysed the actions of the Alliance for the implementation of its strategy and emphasised that the dialogue with Russia will continue as well as the development of regional and global arms control, disarmament and non-proliferation system for strengthening collective defence.
The audience enjoyed a possibility to discuss and acquire new knowledge useful for professional and general education.
