Commemoration of the 100th Anniversary of the Lithuanian Armed Forces

On November 21, the General Jonas Žemaitis Military Academy of Lithuania commemorated the 100th Anniversary of the Lithuanian Armed Forces.
 
In his speech about the history of the Lithuanian Armed Forces and their importance to the national defence, Commandant Brigadier General Algis VAIČELIŪNAS emphasized that even the latest military equipment cannot outweigh the importance of professional servicemen led by commanders-leaders who earn their subordinates’ trust. “Thus, the Military Academy of Lithuania carries out a special mission shaping the specificity of its activity. The education and training of the younger generation of officers is the key factor in developing professional and ready for challenges armed forces,” said the Commandant.
 
Vice-Minister of National Defence Vytautas UMBRASAS pointed out that the Military Academy of Lithuania is an ideal place to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Lithuanian Armed Forces as it greatly contributes to important achievements.
 
The centenary history of the establishment and restoration of the Lithuanian Armed Forces was outlined by Lieutenant Colonel (ret.) Gintautas SURGAILIS, PhD, military historian and Chief Researcher at the Research Centre of the Academy.
 
On the solemn occasion, the military and civil staff of the Academy was awarded commendations, special gifts, medals and badges of honour. Soloist Ieva SKORUBSKAITĖ and cadet choir Kariūnas gave a musical performance.
