Leader Development Leader Development Programme covers cadet training and educating with respect to development of the commander-leader personality. This Programme is based on the common human value-system; it is drafted as a subject, being integrated into the Basic Officer Training curriculum. It covers all aspects of civil and professional development. Effectively combining theoretical lectures, practical situations, analysis of real examples, and tasks in the group, also, conducting psychophysical training exercises in the Sports Complex and those on History of Military Art, one teaches cadets commanding and leadership continuously from the first up to the fourth course. During the above mentioned exercises cadets get acquainted with various attitudes to commanding. During them the sources of power of the commander-leader as the initiator of changes are revealed. Also, cadets get deeper into the fields of interrelation between the conceptual (the skills of positive creative thinking, insight, shaping the vision, and intellectual encouragement), emotional (the skills of acquaintance with oneself and others, communication, establishing trust), and the social issues (inspiring others, motivation, impact, conflict resolution, and team building). During the said exercises cadets analyse the main skills of the commander-leader, which helps to reveal and form the mature personality of the officer, the creator of the future. Cadets are encouraged to think creatively, to express their ideas accurately and smoothly, generate progressive ideas, work independently, make impact on others when making decisions. All officer development methodology that is used at the Military Academy of Lithuania is based on the military teaching of the Western countries and teaching and educational principles of scientific institutions of the West as well. Ways how the aim of the leader development exercises could be implemented: - principles of leader development should equally apply to all cadets-commanders;
- teaching moral and ethical conduct;
- development of harmonious communication among cadets;
- teaching exemplary conduct in respect of all cadets.
Tasks of the leader development exercises: - to develop the cadet ability to command during exercises and in barracks;
- to develop the cadet trust in oneself that they need as young commanders;
- to train cadets to understand the practical and theoretical essence of leadership in the process of command;
- to train cadets how to analyse circumstances and reasons that have impact on the morale of soldiers in time of the peace and war;
- to train cadets to develop mutual communication skills and build up team spirit and compatibility;
- to train cadets to follow the principles of pedagogical teaching and humane command in practical activities;
- to provide practical advice and consultations that help people to resolve personal and social problems;
Tasks of the leader development process: - to understand the significance of honesty, morale, and initiative; and to follow these provisions when performing military service;
- to know that the officer must behave properly at all times, not only when performing military service;
- to understand that the officer must sacrifice if necessary, especially when official necessity requires;
- to apply skills of the work in group and teaching in a group in daily activities;
- to be able to professionally and creatively communicate with others orally and in writing;
- to be competent at modes of communication in the process of command;
- to consider positive advice and consultations.
The sequence and contents of the leader development exercises vary with respect to different cadet course, which makes the gradual practical commander-leader training more diverse. The theoretical course teaching methods include lectures and seminars during which educational issues, functions, qualities and skills as well as factors are discussed. The practical course teaching methods include seminars-discussions and practical exercises (in the form of analysis, tests, and discussions). Here the main measures include: - discussion on what the commander has to do;
- discussion on what kind of commander one has to be;
- discussion on how to perform leadership tasks (this includes planning of a seminar, consultation, providing information, control, and support, also, evaluation).
- development of leadership skills in the process of command;
- explanation of significance of the leader’s psychophysical training for formation of the character and leadership skills.
