The first study year began on 1 September 1992 at the National Defence School in Vilnius (present MAL). The first Class of Cadets included 154 male cadets. They studied according to the Mechanised Rifleman- and State Border Guard Service Programmes. The Cadet Council was established the same year (1992).

In 1997, when the third Class of Cadets was formed, the decision was made to introduce a new structural unit, 4 companies. They would include cadets of different grades. 3rd-year cadets would be appointed as commanders of appropriate levels; and the 1st- and 2nd-year cadets would become their direct subordinates. The system would also include rotation in case the cadet-commander failed to successfully accomplish tasks within his competence. These companies were named after acclaimed battles: 1st Company becoming the Company of the Zalgiris Battle (also, Grunwald Battle), 2nd turning the Company of the Durbe Battle, 3rd  known as the Company of the Battle by Orsa, and 4th as the Company of the Saule Battle (the Sun’s or Siauliai Battle).

In the year 2000 the first 8 female cadets were accepted to the Military Academy of Lithuania.

At present the MAL Cadet Battalion consists of 200 cadets.

The task of the Cadet Battalion is to train and educate officers to meet the requirements of the modern army.

The Cadet Battalion is a structural division of the General Jonas Zemaitis Military Academy of Lithuania. The Battalion includes the Management group (Staff of Cadet Battalion) and four cadet companies (first-fourth year cadets). It is headed by the Chief of Battalion.

At present the Battalion includes 180 cadets who are divided into 4 companies and 11 officers of professional military service. Every company is headed by a tactics officer (officer of professional military service) and senior cadets. Only fourth-year cadets are appointed to the officer positions of company commander, deputy company commander and platoon commander. Second-year and third-year cadets serve as staff sergeants (company sergeant and platoon sergeant). This division to different positions enables cadets to perceive peculiarities of professional military service and induces improvement of planning skills.

Cadets spend most of their time in the Battalion. Their studies last for four years. Here they live, study, make plans, prepare for training, organise festivals, meetings, rest after lectures and exercises.
