The General Jonas Zemaitis Military Academy of Lithuania Library is the youngest of all libraries that represent Lithuanian higher education institutions. Established in 1992, it would function as a division of the National Defence School in Vilnius (present MAL). In 1994, when the said school became the Military Academy of Lithuania, the status of the library changed as well. Today the MAL Library belongs to the category of academic libraries; it is a member of the Academic Library Association of Lithuania and that of scientific library associations; also, an active participant of the Lithuanian Academic Libraries Network (LABT), a project regarding foundation and installation of an integral information system that would unite libraries of institutions of higher education of Lithuania, including the MAL. The Kaunas Technological University is the coordinator of this LABT project.

At present the MAL Library is proud to include 250,000 copies of documents in its funds accessible to the reader. Yearly this number increases by about 10,000 copies. 80 percent of all books are study-related literature in Lithuanian, English, German, French, and other languages. The Library subsribes to 86 periodical publications. Its funds are classified as follows: Humanities; Law; Technology, Applied Sciences, Philology (Language Science); also, informative publications; dictionaries, manuals, catalogues, and encyclopaedias, etc. The largest part of funds, meanwhile, is dedicated to specialised sciences: Armament and Firing; Military Art; History of the Armed Forces of Lithuania; Military and Physical Training; Tactics; Logistics, etc. They extensively include, among others, scientific research works by the MAL Professors and lecturers.

Publications by the Training and Doctrine Command of the Armed Forces of Lithuania also contribute to the MAL Library funds. Many valuable books have been given as a present to the MAL Library by the Lithuanians in emigration, the Rotary Club (USA), the Defence Attachés of the UK, Poland, Austria, France, Czech Republic, MAL lecturers, cadets, and individual people.

     The MAL Library is honoured to hold the following collections:

  •     Publications on History of Warfare and Wars;
  •     Collections of old and rare books;
  •     Archival sets of military-related journals and magazines.

The MAL Library services 1650 users (readers), with 60 working places in the Reading Room and 5 workstations in the Internet Reading Room. Here the library users can receive consultations on how to search for information; also, they can enjoy a book exhibition, ‘Leader Development’.

The main aims of the MAL Library are as follows:

  •  to contribute to training of highly qualified Lithuanian officers and specialists for the National Defence System of Lithuania;
  •  to conduct educative, cultural, and information dissemination activities;
  •  to provide study-and-science-related information and services for the MAL cadets, staff, and the broader public;

Since 1 January 2006 the Library of the Publishing and Information Provision Service of the LR Ministry of National Defence has been also located in the premises of the MAL Library. By joining these two libraries, the MAL Library has become the largest and wealthiest library within the National Defence System with regard to its funds of documents and the number of the library users. In addition, the MAL Library has also become a methodological centre among the libraries of the Lithuanian Armed Forces.
