The Department of the Humanities was established in July 1992 as a department of the National Defence School. It was called the Department of Politology at the time. In 1995, when the status of the School changed, the department was reorganised into that of the Humanities.
The department initially was headed by Dr. Zenonas Kriaučeliūnas (1992-7). Today the Head of the Department is Capt Rolanda Kazlauskaitė-Markelienė (since 1997).
The young people studying at the Military Academy of Lithuania make the brightest part of their generation, the departments lecturers claim. The MAL cadets are perfectly aware what duty and responsibility mean; also, they know that their future prospects and those of their Homeland largely depend on the level of education they attain.
The Academy aims at training officers as platoon commanders who are to command men and women in the Armed Forces of Lithuania. Thus, the Department of the Humanities aims at providing in-depth studies that would help cadets get acquainted with the nature of the human-being, stressing that the Armed Forces make a part of a society, which, like a mirror, reflects the main challenges and expectations of the society.
