In the development of the processes of globalisation not only the demand for the specialists of international relations increases also the necessity arises for the specialists of other fields to acquaint themselves better with the international issues. 

The Lithuanian Armed Forces is no exception. The need for the officers-international relation specialists became extremely important after the re-establishment of the Independence of Lithuania when it had to perform a central role in implementing the state’s foreign policy priority – integration into the Euro-Atlantic security architecture. 

As a result, in 2000 it was decided that the Military Academy of Lithuania will prepare a study programme of international relations while cooperating closely with the Institute of International Relations and Political Science of Vilnius University that has relevant experience in preparing the specialists of international relations. It was also decided to establish the Department of Political Science responsible for the implementation of the programme. The Department was established in 2001 at the Academy.

The head of the department is Doctor of Political Sciences Gediminas Vitkus.
Since the academic years 2005-2007, the Department of Political Sciences has begun establishing the second cycle studies of Military Diplomacy. The new Master’s degree programme was another decision of the Military Academy of Lithuania to properly respond to the challenges the Lithuanian Armed Forces meet and to ensure Lithuania’s full participation in the Euro-Atlantic security architecture and in various missions for international peace keeping and enforcement.
