On December 19, 1996, the law by Seimas on the principles of national security was passed. The law provided the general national defence provisions.
On December 12, after general elections to Seimas, ambassador Česlovas Stankevičius was appointed the Minister of Defence.
The state, implementing the tasks of interoperability with NATO standards, furthered modernisation of forces, and consequently, of the Academy.
The school was busy with officer training concept development, as well as the update of bachelor study plans.
The Military Academy produced 94 full-time, and 46 part-time graduates. They all earned the qualification of a platoon commander and the diploma of further education.
The academic staff most energetically supported the Research Centre’s activities; prepared and published 10 publications for learning purposes.
Many officers and cadets were engaged in extracurricular activities in collegiate science societies.
International relations enhanced co-operation with military academies abroad.
Accomplishing the USA-Lithuania „Military to Military“ programme, the delegation of the Military Academy of Lithuania visited the United States Military Academy.
Six Polish officers came to study Lithuanian; seminars organised on regular basis had their own foreign guests either.
