While implementing its Mission, the Military Academy of Lithuania organizes the four-year professional Military training and University studies. Particular attention is paid to intellectual, military, professional, spiritual, ethnical and social development of the cadet as a commander-leader. Upon successful completion of studies at the Academy the cadets are commissioned First Lieutenant (1st Lt) officer grade, qualification of a platoon commander and a Bachelor’s degree in Public Administration and Political Science. Generally they are appointed to take the positions of platoon commanders at the divisions of Lithuanian Armed Forces. The admission procedure to the MAL is held in 3 stages: I st. stage - Selection process. The youth eager to study at the Military Academy of Lithuania must take the test of professional suitability that is organized by the MAL Selection Centre. The selection process normally starts in October-November and is held all year round, until July. Please refer to Admission procedure for more information about selection process. II nd stage - those who have passed professional suitability test must undergo health check that is conducted by Military Medical Expertise Commission, Military Medical Service located in Kaunas. III rd stage - submission of applications to study at the MAL. Applications are analyzed in case of successful completion of the two previous stages. Cadet Battalion The cadets, studying at the Academy, are appointed to companies that are headed by tactics officers. The companies make up a battalion that consists of about 200 cadets who are headed by chief of Battalion. Tactics officers are direct cadets’ commanders. They are main cadets as commanders- leaders’ educators while implementing programs of military training and university studies of the academy. They supervise the cadets’ individual effort and behaviour during the studies. Tactics officers teach, orient, and educate cadets with the aim to educate leaders. 2nd – 4th year cadets are appointed to the positions of company commanders to acquire as much practical leadership qualities as possible. Cadets’ support Cadets during the years of studies are fully maintained by the state. Cadets are provided with free accommodation at the Academy barracks, clothing their health care is financed from the state budget of the Republic of Lithuania. They get obligatory insurance against accidents in service. All studying cadets are paid a monthly differenced grant that depends on cadets’ rating, years of military service, and the results of the previous semester; therefore, the amount of the pay differs. The grant fund provides for 1.0 minimum living standard (MLS) for those with up to one year of service, 1.7 MLS for 1 to 2 years of service, 2.4 MLS for 2 to 3, 3.1 MLS for 3 to 4, 3.8 MLS for 4 to 5, and 4.5 MLS for those with more than 5 years of service. Physical training and sport Physical training and sport is inseparable part of cadets’ training. The Academy holds annual sport competitions and tournaments with the participation of both cadets and teachers. The main sports are: basketball, combat self-defence and wrestling, military pentathlon, field-and-track athletics, cross-country race, triathlon, heavy athletics, weight lifting, football. The select team of the Military Academy has achieved good results in games within the National Defence System as well as in higher school students’ and teachers’ championships, Baltic States students’ games (SELL), in Vilnius city, Republican and International competitions and tournaments. Practical training Practical training is part of the process of military training and university studies in which cadets work to acquire practical skills according to their specialty at an institution providing the practice. Cultural education Cadets participate in different societies and clubs at the Academy, such as the Cadets’ Theatre, the Cadets’ Vocal Ensemble, and Men’s Choir “Kariûnas” which contributes to making the Academy and the military famous throughout Lithuania and abroad. Second year cadets of the Military Academy have a compulsory dancing course. Different cultural events are held at the Cadets’ Club, well-known singers of Lithuania are invited to perform.
